Giving the Thumbs-Up in an Orange Jumpsuit (and other glimpses of Nicaragua)

We spent just under two weeks in Nicaragua, mostly on the Corn Islands. I would’ve loved to stay longer, but, as mentioned previously, things didn’t exactly go as planned on this trip. Since the last post was pretty word-heavy (and since I move across the United States in less than a week but have yet to pack a single thing), I’ll just leave you with several quick glimpses of Nicaragua for now. You go enjoy these, and I’ll start either Game of Thrones or Homeland so that I can continue to procrastinate properly.

Some people would say that following these little girls around the entirety of Little Corn Island, listening in on their conversation, and taking a picture of them without their knowledge constitutes stalking, but I say that everything is subjective.

This man was listening to music on his headphones and flipping through pictures on his phone while operating a vehicle. This man was our shuttle driver.

This is one of the songs that was playing during our cab ride between bus stations in Managua, Nicaragua.

volcano boarding

This is me, pre-volcano boarding, looking really good in an orange jumpsuit despite the fact that I am giving the thumbs-up.

This is me, post-volcano boarding, looking really good in an orange jumpsuit despite the fact that I have volcano in my arm.

This is the Billy Joel song that I accidentally listened to on repeat for an undocumented amount of time after I fell asleep on the shuttle bus. I’m just saying this in case anyone happens to see the play count for that song on any of my devices and assumes I’m obsessed with Billy Joel. IT WAS AN ACCIDENT.

This was a moment of panic.

ferry crossing corn islands

This was our 27 hour cargo ship ride. We shared our corner of bunks and our tuna supply with a family of cats.

This is how to catch a monkey and keep it as your pet. B and I can vouch for the efficiency of this method, as we met a man on the cargo ship who told us that he caught and raised a monkey in this exact way. And I believe him.

These are two Little Corn instagrams that I’m pretty proud of.

This is how cool all of the houses look on Little Corn Island and how uncool B looks in the shadows.

  2. Got here from Audrey’s post. Seems like you got a very interesting trip to Nicaragua. I’ll be looking to your new posts from now on. And, yes, you are looking really good in an orange jumpsuit. Thumbs-Up :)

  3. Listening to music and flipping photos while driving – that’s dangerous!

But anyway I love the beach. :) Also, the house looks like the houses here in the Philippines.

Shockingly, he was actually a much better and safer driver than our next one, who got sick and almost killed us! The joys of bus travel.

  4. Ha! I love this post. It really encapsulates the experience of travel in little moments. I fell asleep listening to a repeating Radiolab podcast on cities in Laos, and had weird nightmares for days because of it! Billy Joel isn’t all that bad..

Haha, I guess I’m lucky that the song I fell asleep to was semi-inspirational instead of nightmare-inducing. Maybe now I have an unconsciously renewed confidence in all of my childhood dreams?

  5. Love the walter white, meth cook look in the shot of you with the goggles and jump suit!

  6. I agree with Susan, the little random moments or spaces of between the ‘big’ things are just as important, if not more so, to remember!

  7. Oh, Nicaragua! How I love thee. My wife was in the Peace Corps there in the North (Nueva Segovia) and I will never forget the 7 months I spent there with her. Loved seeing these photos… really brought me back.
